Set up your card terminal

Charge the Stripe Reader S700 and connect it to Wi-Fi. Then type the code on its screen into GU Manager or GU Bookings.

Before you start

Check these four things first. You need all of them to finish the setup.

  • The Stripe Reader S700, with the USB-C cable and the power adapter from its box.
  • The name and password of your Wi-Fi network. The reader takes payments over the internet.
  • Payments activated by Stripe. To check, open Store settings in GU Manager, then Bank account & payouts. Until then, the terminal card can say Waiting for Stripe.
  • An owner, admin or manager account. A team member with another role cannot pair a reader.

Charge the reader and connect it to Wi-Fi

These steps happen on the reader. You do not need the tablet yet.

  • Charge the reader. Plug the USB-C cable into the port on the left side of the reader. Plug the other end into the power adapter, then into a wall socket. Stripe says a full charge takes about 2.5 hours.
  • Turn it on. Hold down the power button on the right side until the screen turns on.
  • Open the reader settings. Swipe right from the left edge of the reader screen, then tap Settings. The reader asks for an admin passcode. Stripe gives it on its setup page for the S700.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi. In the reader settings, tap Wi-Fi settings. Choose your network and connect to it.
  • Leave it plugged in. Stripe advises keeping the reader plugged in and switched on. It then installs its updates on its own, at night. If you unplug it at night, an update can start when you turn it back on.

Pair the reader with Glow Up

A new reader shows a pairing code on its screen. No code? In the reader settings, tap Generate pairing code. Pairing links the reader to the establishment you are working in. You can remove it later in GU Bookings.

  • Type the code in GU Manager or GU Bookings. In GU Manager, open Devices and tap Pair terminal. During setup, Pair your devices on the home page shows the same button. In GU Bookings, tap More, then Hardware, then Add. Type the code in Registration code and tap Pair.

Check that GU Bookings sees the reader

Do this check on the tablet where you take payments.

  • Find the reader in GU Bookings. In GU Bookings, tap More at the bottom of the screen, then Hardware. Your reader is listed under Readers, with the Online badge.
  • You can also pull down from the top edge of any GU Bookings screen. The panel that opens shows Terminal online.
  • Paired from GU Manager while GU Bookings was open? Close GU Bookings and open it again. The tablet reads the list of readers when it starts.
  • Ready for card payments. When the reader shows Online in GU Bookings, you can take card payments with it at the counter.
  • It shows Offline. Check that the reader is on and connected to Wi-Fi. Then, in GU Bookings, tap the three dots next to the reader and tap Reconnect. This reads its status again.

Frequently asked questions

Do the tablet and the reader need the same Wi-Fi?

No. GU Bookings sends each payment to the reader over the internet, through Stripe. Each device needs a working internet connection, on any network.

Can I change the language on the reader?

Yes. Swipe right from the left edge of the reader screen to open its menu, then pick your language.

Does the reader work on battery?

Yes. Stripe says a full battery lasts about 15 hours of use. Plug it back in at the end of the day, so it can update at night.

Do I pay for the card reader?

One card reader is included with your account. The pricing page shows what your account includes.

Where do I find the reader's admin passcode?

Stripe gives it on its setup page for the Stripe Reader S700, in the part about the settings menu. The link below opens that page.
