Take a card payment
In GU Bookings, open a finished booking and tap Pay now, then Card terminal. The client pays on the Stripe Reader S700, and the tablet shows Payment approved.
Before you start
You start the payment in GU Bookings, on the tablet. The client pays on the Stripe Reader S700. No reader yet, or does it show Offline? The pairing article covers both.
- The reader is paired to this establishment, switched on and connected to Wi-Fi. In GU Bookings, under More, then Hardware, it shows Online.
- Have two readers or more? In More, then Hardware, Reader for this tablet sets the one this tablet uses. Automatic, the default, uses the first reader that is online. Give the client that reader.
- Every team member signed in on GU Bookings can take a card payment. No PIN is asked.
Open the sale
Start from the booking or from the Register. Both lead to the same screen: Select a payment method.
- From a booking. Open the booking on your calendar. When the service is finished, its status reads Ready to pay. Tap Pay now to go straight to the payment methods. Or tap Checkout to see the sale first and add to it.
- From the Register. Tap Register at the bottom of the screen. Tap the booking under Recent bookings, or add what the client is buying. Picking a client is optional. Then tap Checkout, followed by the total, at the bottom of the sale.
- The Register asks you to set up a grid. Until your register grid is built, the Register shows Set up your register grid and hides the sale. Pay now on a booking still works.
Take the payment
The client is charged only once they pay on the reader. Until then, you can stop.
- Tap Card terminal. On Select a payment method, tap Card terminal. GU Bookings sends the amount to the reader.
- Let the client pay on the reader. The reader shows the amount and asks for the card. The client taps their card on the reader, or inserts it. The tablet shows Processing payment... while the reader waits for the card, and until the bank answers.
- The reader asks for a PIN. Sometimes the reader asks the client to type their PIN, or to insert the card. This is a bank security check. Let the client finish on the reader.
- Need to stop? Tap Try another method, under the amount, or the back arrow at the top left. GU Bookings stops the payment on the reader. You go back to the payment methods once the reader has let go of it, and nothing is charged. If the card is already on the reader, wait for the result.
- Tap Done. When the bank accepts the card, the tablet shows Payment approved with a green tick. Tap Done.
- When the sale is closed. Sale complete appears. To email the receipt, tap Digital. Then tap New sale, or No receipt when the sale has no client.
If something goes wrong
Each problem shows on the tablet with a What to do box and two buttons. Try another method stops the payment on the reader. You go back to the payment methods once the reader has let go of it. Retry checks the payment first, then asks for the same amount again. It uses the same payment, so the client is not charged twice.
- Terminal not connected. GU Bookings could not reach the reader, or no reader is paired. Check that the reader is on and shows Online under More, then Hardware. With two readers, check the one set under Reader for this tablet: it is used even when it is offline. Then tap Retry. To take cash instead, tap Try another method.
- Terminal not connected while the client is paying. The tablet waits as long as the reader asks for the card. This message shows only if the reader goes offline, or if GU Bookings cannot reach it for about 10 seconds. If the reader loses its Wi-Fi, the message can take up to 2 minutes to show. The tablet keeps watching the payment: if the client pays late, the screen changes to Payment approved. Check the reader, then tap Retry.
- Terminal busy. The reader is taking another payment, for example from another tablet. Nothing was sent to the reader for this sale. Wait until that payment is done, then tap Retry. To take the payment another way, tap Try another method.
- Payment not stopped. You tapped Try another method, the back arrow or another page. The tablet could not confirm that the reader stopped. This happens when the reader cannot be reached, or while the bank checks a card. The tablet stays on this screen and keeps watching the payment. Look at the reader: if it still asks for the card, cancel there, then tap Try another method again. If the client paid, wait: the screen changes to Payment approved.
- The card screen closed during a payment. After a reload, the back gesture or a new sign-in, GU Bookings remembers a card payment that was not finished. When you open a payment method, the card screen opens first and checks that payment. If it went through, Payment approved shows: tap Done. If it was for an earlier sale, the screen says so, and it is not added to this sale. If it was stopped, the method you picked opens. If it cannot be checked, Payment not stopped shows.
- The client already paid on the reader. Tap Retry. It checks the payment before it asks for the card again. If the card went through, the tablet shows Payment approved: tap Done. Do not take the amount again another way. If you already left this screen, open Activity and look under Closed. If the sale is listed there, the card payment went through.
- Card reader error. The card was refused or could not be read. Ask the client to try again, to insert the chip or to use another card. Then tap Retry.
- The client cancelled on the reader. The reader shows a cancel button while it waits for the card. If the client taps it, the tablet shows Card reader error a few seconds later. Tap Retry to ask for the card again.
- Card and QR need the full amount. This message shows when part of the sale is already paid, for example online. The reader always charges the whole sale, so Card terminal is turned off. Take the rest with Cash or Bank transfer.
- Payment confirmed, but booking status sync needs a refresh. This message can appear after a card payment on a booking. The payment is saved. Only the new status of the booking did not save.

Frequently asked questions
Can clients pay with Bancontact?
Stripe lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover for card payments in Belgium. It can take a Bancontact card that also shows a Visa or Mastercard logo, through that network. If a card is refused, ask for another card.
Can the client add a tip on the reader?
No. GU Bookings sends each payment to the reader with the tip screen turned off. The client pays the amount shown on the tablet.
Can I take a card payment on my phone?
No. GU Bookings takes card payments on the Stripe Reader S700 only. The reader connects to the internet over Wi-Fi, and GU Bookings sends each payment to it.
What does a card payment cost me?
Card payments have fees, listed on our pricing page. At the counter, the client pays the sale total and the establishment pays the fees.
How do I refund a card payment?
From the sale, not from the reader. In Activity, open the sale under Closed and tap Refund. An owner, admin or manager then enters their PIN.
